Vibrant Health Advocates – Apollo meets fishermen, deckhands, and harbour workers on the quayside in Peterhead — offering informal, no-pressure health conversations that help working men spot problems early and take the next step, at their own pace.
Peterhead is one of Europe's great fishing ports, and the men who crew its trawlers, work its docks, and process its catch are the backbone of the Buchan coast. They are also among the least likely in Scotland to visit their GP, to discuss a health worry with anyone, or to act on a symptom that has been quietly troubling them for months.
Vibrant Health Advocates – Apollo exists to close that gap — not by asking men to walk into a health centre, but by walking out to meet them on the quayside, in the fish market, and beside the boats they have crewed since they left school. We have been doing this work for a number of years, and we know that a ten-minute conversation beside a trawler can lead to a blood-pressure check, a GP referral, or simply the reassurance that someone is paying attention.
That matters enormously in a community where stoicism is worn as a badge of honour and 'getting on with it' can come at a devastating cost to long-term health.
Learn about usOur trained health advocates walk the harbour, the fish market, and the processing areas of Peterhead several times a week, stopping for informal conversations with the men who keep this port running. We go to them — because we know they will not always come to us.
Blood pressure, pulse, weight, and a frank conversation about how a man is actually feeling — our checks are quick, private, and happen wherever is convenient. No appointments, no referral letters, no clinical waiting rooms: just a practical snapshot of where your health stands today.
When a check-in reveals something that needs following up, we do not hand over a leaflet and walk away. We help men understand their options, warm-refer into NHS and community services, and stay in touch to make sure the first step does not become the last one.
On any given week you'll find our advocates on the quaysides, in the sheds, and around the fish market — carrying portable blood pressure monitors, plain-language health information, and, most importantly, the patience to let a conversation develop at whatever pace the man in front of us needs.
How we workWhether you are a man looking for a quiet word about your health, a local employer interested in outreach, or someone who simply wants to support what we do — we'd very much like to hear from you.
